If you want to play online at all, then I'd say you should buy from beyond, as a lot of online groups and discord servers require the use of D&D Beyond sheets, and without buying the books there you don't have access to all the content. WebD&D 5e has a free online version too, however. You can access all the content that is in the Basic Rules, SRD, and EEPC completely for free so it's a little disingenuous to imply that there is no free digital option.
